Vasikkavuoma naturreservat, a bucolic area

Returning towards Pajala we take a detour to another natural historic site the Vasikkavuoma naturreservat. It is one of the largest Nordic mowing marsh that was used for hay harvesting for over two hundred years. It is a cultural treasure that also protects birds, plants and mosses and we are looking forward to exploring it.

We start the exploration on a quasi-boardwalk entering a beautiful meadows with houses, possibly, in the distance. It is quite enjoyable and the views are expansive. And there is no one else around, always a bonus.

The fields are quite bucolic with sheds sprinkled across a large meadow used historically and again recently to produce hay to feed domestic animals. And cranes quite likely. We take lots of photos of the meadows, we really cannot take our eyes away from the great views.

There is also a bird tower nearby that we climb, unfortunately it is not crane season so there is not much to see birdwise on the fields. The nearby shelter is also not useful today, there is no rain, so after wandering a bit more through the area it is time to return to Finland, we still have a major stop planned.
