Jakobstad, the Swedish town in Finland

After spending the night in downtown Jakobstad we have to explore it before leaving. But first it is time to eat a good Finnish breakfast, lots of croissants and meat, we always wonder why the US cannot source similar breakfasts.

And then it is time for a short tour of Jakobstad taking a look at the Skata (Old Town) area around our hotel.

The city center is surprisingly busy after our exploration of Helsinki which actually seemed less lively. But as we walk a bit outside of the main pedestrian street the crowds thin fat.

Part of our exploration is to search for impressive buildings. The City Hall is expected but the tobacco factory less so.

The Fire House itself looks like a church which is interesting. However as in many other Finnish cities we are attracted by the wooden houses, they are everywhere in towns that didn’t burn or survived the fires, makes sense given the abundance of wood in the area.

As we return to the hotel we notice a surprising exhibit in the middle of the pedestrian area. It is showing how you would survive in a rollover to random passersby that are strapped in and then rolled over. Quite scary.

And then after picking our car we make one more stop at a supermarket to buy provisions, who knows what we can find further north. Chanterelles maybe? Looking forward to it as we start north again.
