Exploring downtown Turku

Besides the Turku Castle and Forum Marinum we also want to explore more of Turku but first we have to find a restaurant as we are quite hungry. We have a restaurant chosen that we are looking for and hopefully can reach before it starts to rain…and we do.

We have chosen it because it is a Viking themed restaurant, Viikinkiravintola Harald, and serves some unusual fare like boar, bear, reindeer and quite a few other game meats as well as an assortment of fish.

We buy a few combination platters which allows us to taste all the different things that are on offer. And they are quite filling so afterwards we want to walk the food off for a short while.

We pass by the beautiful Turku Market Hall, the second oldest market hall in Finland opening at the end of the 19th century. It was built to address the trade taking place on the squares of Turku previously with low hygiene standards.

And then it is time to return to the hotel, we are not yet used that it is still light outside at 11PM. On the way back we notice that some buildings have depressions of them and then we recognize them, those are signs from guns. There is an informational sign nearby telling us it is due to attacks from Russian planes during World War 2 when Finland unexpectedly repelled an invasion from Russia.

After a good night sleep we wake up to a rainy day in Turku. After breakfast we decide to explore the city a bit more before checking out and leaving on our way north. We start with the beautiful Turku Theater the oldest theatre in the country, founded in 1839 and then continue past the river full of fake Eider ducks for whatever reason.

And then we return back to the hotel passing the stern Turku Cathedral and the impressive Turku City Library while avoiding the rain as much as we can which is not much and buying some provisions along the way. And then on we go time to start our trip north.
