One of the highlights of Nuremberg visible from all of downtown is the Imperial Castle and our research shows that it is worth visiting. It was one of Europe’s most formidable medieval fortifications in the Imperial City of Nuremberg where the Holy Roman Emperors stayed for a while as they shuffled from one Imperial Castle to the next. Our visit starts with the gardens however the museum and castle proper are closed so we decide to come the next day to visit.
The next day we can finally visit the impressive castle. There are some great 360 views of the old town from the tower and we enjoy walking around and just taking it all in.
From up high it is time to descend towards the museum which is in the main buildings. The whole castle was destroyed by air raids in World War 2 and most of what can be visited now is a reconstruction.
The museum itself is focused on weapons of war as you would expect in a castle museum. The powder horns are especially interesting in our opinion but the museum is small and soon we move on.
The Emperors Chapel is especially important historically as it is one of the few structures that wasn’t destoyed during the air raids so it is original compared to the rest of the castle. Many rooms are still quite austere, they were not refurbished (yet?) but still they are fun to walk through. And then it is time to exit to continue exploring the historically important town.
