We start the free day before an evening flight with a visit to Duke University which is near where our conference was held. We first explore the weird dinosaur before we make our way to the campus of this private university.
It is quite an old university being founded in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers as can be guessed from the huge chapel visible from anywhere on the campus.
What we like especially is that it has many green spaces, it looks quite peaceful especially given that it is Saturday so there are not a lot of students around.
It even has a large lake with a Japanese inspired bridge over it. We decide to take a look if there are any interesting birds along the lake and we find…a squirrel.
Immediately after the squirrel we find also a few birds including some beautiful exotic geese.
We then explore a bit more the campus marveling at the elegant buildings before returning to the car as we still have to drive to South Carolina to find a few caches in the state, our first in the state.
