Exploring the Sonoran Preserve

Today we decide to visit the Sonoran Preserve which sits north of Phoenix. It is not yet that developed so finding a parking place in the rows of houses is quite difficult. But we find out that we can pass the first gate and park right after it which is great and then it is time to explore and find geocaches in the area.

What we find first however is a crashed jeep. It was crashed a long time ago but it is still fun to observe how it slowly decomposes in the harsh desert conditions.

The trail we take is a loop, the Dixie Mountain Loop but it has a spur called Western Vista Trail towards a peak from which we can have great views of the valley.

There are relatively few other hikers on the trail today allowing us to explore the area in peace and just enjoy the beautiful weather and views, and of course find lots of geocaches.

A few geocaches are hidden near the chollas which is a bit annoying but we make it safely through the minefields to find them. We like the teddybear cholla, we really do, but it is better to like them from a distance. And then it is back to the car and home after an enjoyable time outside.
