Inis Cealtra the Holy Island

This morning we eat mostly Irish specialties that we bought the day before. Specifically we wanted to try black and white pudding, two Irish breakfast specialties. They are good, like salami, unless you would know how the black one especially is made you would not necessarily know the difference.

Our first stop for the day is Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) a place that we learned about through geocaching as one cache we really wanted to find is located on the island. The rain that dogged us in the morning has stopped by now and we hoping this holds as we call the boat that will take us to the island. We learn on the boat that we will be left on the island until a specified time, this feels like a setup from a horror movie.

We are the only people on the island, a former monastic settlement, long abandoned. It has an Irish round tower and multiple church ruins.

We start exploring the island with our first visit being at the best preserved church. Of course this one is also the only one locked even though there isn’t that much to protect inside.

The cemetery is also quite scenic, as cemeteries go, and we learn later that it is still in use.

At some point we start feeling watched and us we look around we see multiple cows appear seemingly from nowhere. This is spooky enough that one of our relatives gets stressed out and tries to avoid any contact. But that proves unavoidable as we have to cross through them to get to the boat landing leading to many staring contests between us and the cows, something seemingly straight out of action flicks.
