Short stop on old US 66 section after overnight in Flagstaff

On the way to Flagstaff the location of our Friday accomodation we make a detour through Prescott. This is to clean up a few caches that were left from our last visit including a night cache that we weren’t able to finish last time. This time with a bit of luck we make it to the cache which calls for a celebratory dinner in Flagstaff at a Italian restaurant before going to sleep.

On Saturday morning we start with the hotel breakfast that we supplement with fry bread found nearby. And then we start towards Williams, with the plan being to explore along the way. It doesn’t take long to find something to investigate, there is smoke near the interstate likely due to a fire.

We stop at the next exit and try to identify what is happening but with no luck. It seems the fire is in the distance and not a danger to us so we decide to continue on after finding a couple caches near our stopping point.

We then follow a cache to an old section of the original route 66. It is surprisingly hidden and easy to access and we hike a bit on it as it is quite interesting. You can see the old pavement and the road section but the forest has started to claim it back.
