For Memorial Day we have planned a five day trip to New Mexico visiting Los Alamos and Taos as well as the Catwalk and the wilderness forests in Western New Mexico. It is quite an uneventful trip with a tire blowout on one day and a tree blocking our return from a remote trailhead on a different day. Even so the sights are beautiful and the nature is magnificent and we really enjoy our exploration of this part of New Mexico.
Click on the Links below or Markers on the map above to go directly to a specific part of our trip and follow our long trip to New Mexico exploring old cities and beautiful nature.
- Brushy Mountain CampingThe first day we leave late so we drive to a relatively small peak in a quiet area to camp for the night
- The Catwalk, a thrilling adventureWe start the day with a surprisingly interesting one mile trail along the historic 1890s mining suspended walkway
- Eventful Bursum Road with stops at Mogollon Ghost Town and Bear Wallow LookoutWe take a backroad towards Albuquerque stopping at Mogollon Ghost Town and Bear Wallow Lookout before disaster strikes
- Short day in and around Los AlamosLos Alamos is the birthplace of the atomic bomb however we spent less than we intended in the area due to our tire issues exploring mostly the Valle Grande
- Santuario of Chimayo and Las Trampas churchOn our way to Taos we visit Santuario de Chimayo a small shrine that has become one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States
- Exploring downtown TaosWe spend midday in Taos which is considered to be an artist colony and is full of stores, artist studios and restaurants
- East Fork Red River TH hikeIn the afternoon we explore a beautiful trail with wildflowers from East Fork Red River TH which ends with a mishap that luckily gets resolved
- Long drive back with a stop at Camel RockThe drive back takes about ten hours so the only stop we have planned is at Camel Rock a fun formation along the way
