Eventful Bursum Road with stops at Mogollon Ghost Town and Bear Wallow Lookout

From the Catwalk we take a backroad, Bursum Rd, towards our accomodation located between Santa Fe and Taos. First stop is at Mogollon Ghost Town with some nice views from the road of the town and some nearby mines.

As in every ghost town there are some abandoned buildings nearby and an old cemetery that we visit before continuing on the 100+ mile mostly dirt road.

One more stop on the road is at Bearwallow Mountain Lookout where we hope to see the views from up top. Unfortunately the Lookout is manned so we decide to stop before it and just enjoy the views from there before starting our descent.

And then disaster strikes. We hear a loud sound and as we stop at the side of the road we notice that one tire has blown. We are in the middle of nowhere with no phone reception on a downward sloping road. In the end we decide to exchange the tire and luckily we have a full size spare tire so we start replacing it slowly. We bring rocks and block the other tires so it doesn’t slide downwards and then with some luck exchange the tire.

Elated but scared we do a beeline to the nearest paved highway and then it is time to ge to the hotel. Due to the unexpected stop we get there quite late at night and quite tired and quickly fall asleep.
