Next we decide that instead of returning on the main highway we are going to use a couple very long dirt roads (more than 40 miles) to take a “shortcut”. It is of course a shortcut only in mileage and not time-wise. The reason behind this is to enjoy the solitude of the backcountry and to visit another ghost town, Signal.
Signal was built as many towns in this area due to an active mine nearby and survived the closure of the mine for some tens of years before finally becoming a ghost town. There is not a lot left besides some ruins and the town cemetery.
Still the most impressive ruin is quite interesting and we explore it for a bit both from above and below before continuing to the main highway and then to Phoenix after three full days.
