Shiprock area, a mysterious place to be

On this MLK day we decide to explore Laughlin and the surrounding area on a long weekend trip. It is an area that we visit relatively often as it is relatively close to Phoenix and offers some beautiful scenery and outdoor opportunities. Our first stop is in the Shiprock area, where a few caches seemed to be placed in interesting locations. The first one already has some great views of the Shiprock and we enjoy the stop before continuing our exploration.

The area is littered with old vehicles, both cars and motorcycles. Some of them are now almost an artwork, we especially chuckle at the “refurbished” motorcycle. It is completely road-worthy…not.

There are also lots of signs of mining, it seems that this was prospected and maybe even exploited intensively during the years. One of the weirder things we find is an artificial small cave with metal doors, we have no idea what it could have been. Was it an ice box or a safe or something else?

The road ends for us near the Hackberry Wash. We are surprised that the river is flowing and we enjoy exploring the area a bit more until the sun starts to set and then it is time to go to Laughlin where we will stay two night at Avi Resort & Casino.
