Last major castle for the day is Cahir Castle. This is one of Ireland’s largest and best preserved castles and it was considered to be impregnable. That lasted for about 300 years until someone decided to use heavy artillery against it and it fell for the first time.
It is one of the rare castles used for defensive purposes that is not in disrepair which certainly makes it worth a visit, to admire a castle how it might have looked centuries ago.
After leaving Cahir and on our way to Dublin, where we will spend our last day in Ireland, we pass many more castles and ruined fortifications. It is quite amazing how such a relatively small country has been fought for and defended over the centuries creating all these fortifications. After arriving at the hotel we drop off the rental car and then return with the hotel shuttle to retire for the day after a frugal dinner.
